Emirates and Finnish refiner Neste have recently announced an expanded partnership agreement for the supply of over 3 million gallons of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in 2024 and 2025. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Emirates, making it the Middle East and Africa-based airline with the largest volume of SAF to be uplifted to date.

The SAF will be provided for flights departing from Amsterdam Schiphol and Singapore Changi airports, catering to the growing demand for sustainable aviation solutions. Out of the total supply, more than 1 million gallons will be neat SAF, accounting for over 30% of the blended ratio when combined with conventional Jet A-1 fuel.

Emirates President, Tim Clark emphasized the importance of this announcement as a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and enhancing operational fuel efficiency. He mentioned that this partnership aligns with their commitment to operating fuel-efficient aircraft and their upcoming fleet renewal initiatives starting in 2024. Additionally, Emirates plans to commence uplifting SAF from its Dubai hub before the end of this year.

Ultimately, this extended partnership between Emirates and Neste underscores their shared dedication to making sustainable aviation a reality. It not only highlights their commitment to the environment but also signifies their commitment to adapting and implementing innovative solutions within the aviation industry.

Emirates Continues Partnership with Neste to Support Sustainable Aviation Fuel Industry

Emirates Airlines is actively engaged in supporting the rapidly developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry through its ongoing partnership with Neste and other stakeholders. The airline hopes that the growing demand from Emirates and other airlines will encourage the scaling up of SAF production and other clean propulsion technologies.

Milestones Achieved

Earlier this year, Emirates, in collaboration with Neste and various industry partners, successfully completed the first demonstration flight in the region powered by 100% SAF. The flight utilized a Boeing 777-300ER operating on SAF in one engine, marking a significant milestone for the airline.

Since then, Emirates has been working closely with its industry partners to analyze the technical aspects and certification requirements necessary to standardize and gain future approval for 100% SAF flying. This demonstrates the airline's commitment to advancing the use of sustainable aviation fuels.

Pioneering Efforts

Emirates conducted its first flight powered by SAF blended with jet fuel back in 2017, departing from Chicago. Since then, the airline has continued to uplift SAF for flights from multiple destinations, including Stockholm. Currently, Emirates operates flights from Paris, Lyon, and Oslo utilizing blended SAF, further showcasing its dedication to sustainable aviation practices.

Scaling Up Production and Supply

Emirates is actively engaging with stakeholders to explore opportunities for scaling up the production and supply of SAF. By collaborating with key players in the industry, the airline aims to contribute to a greener future for aviation.
