On the occasion of the COP28 in Dubai, the President of Kazakhstan and the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan signed the Agreement on Investment (AoI) for TotalEnergies' Mirny project. This project, the largest wind energy initiative in Kazakhstan, aims to provide low-carbon electricity to over 1 million people and reduce CO2 emissions in the country by 3.5 million tons annually.
The Mirny project entails the construction of a 1 GW onshore wind farm consisting of up to 160 turbines. Additionally, a 600 MWh battery energy storage system will be implemented to ensure a reliable power supply. The total investment for Mirny amounts to approximately $1.4 billion. This project exemplifies TotalEnergies' capability to leverage its position as a major partner in the upstream sector and accelerate the development of renewable energy in Oil & Gas countries.
Following the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the Mirny project in June 2023, TotalEnergies will collaborate with the National Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna and the National Company KazMunayGas. Each party will possess a 20% stake in the project.
"At COP28, over 110 nations committed to tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. TotalEnergies fully supports this initiative. Through our innovative wind and battery project, we are directly contributing to the energy transition in Kazakhstan," stated Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. "The signing of this Agreement on Investment paves the way for the commencement of the Mirny project, which will enable TotalEnergies to triple its power generation from 33 TWh to over 100 TWh by 2030."
